When it comes to divorces, it’s the children that suffer the most; and when it’s a high-profile celebrity case, it’s double trouble for the star kids. As Tom Cruise distanced himself from his daughter following his divorce, Katie Holmes ensured to never address her daughter much in public. Now, decades later, the 44-year-old actress appeared on the cover story of  Glamour magazine. Published on Wednesday (April 12), it includes Holmes’ thoughts on her 16-year-old daughter.

Katie Holmes told the interviewer that she is “grateful” to be Suri’s mother. She added, “She’s an incredible person.” She also highlighted how Cruise began to distance himself from his daughter following the divorce, and their relationship hasn’t recovered to date. Holmes said,

“What has been really important for me with my daughter, because she was so visible at a young age, is I really like to protect her.”

Moreover, it was Holmes who wanted to protect her daughter from Scientology. If you aren’t aware, Katie Holmes converted to Scientology for Cruise but regretted the decision later on.

Why Did Tom Cruise Distance Himself From His Daughter?

Tom Cruise’s marriage to Katie Holmes was one of the strangest events in the history of Hollywood. The two tied the knot in a Scientology ceremony at Odescalchi Castle, a day that reportedly cost them more than $3 million. Their daughter, Suri Cruise was already a few months old by then.

As the couple parted ways, followed by a divorce that had the attention of the world’s media, it was their daughter, Suri Cruise who suffered the most. During a deposition of his defamation case against Bauer Media in 2012, the Oscar-winning actor admitted that his “relationship with the Church of Scientology had played a large role in why he was distanced from his child’s life.” When asked if Holmes ended the relationship to protect Suri Cruise from Scientology, his answer was “yes”.
