“My mother was quite unpredictable”: Johnny Depp Revealed His “Cruel” Mom Betty Sue Palmer Made Him Think Childhood Trauma Was Normal
Actor Johnny Depp has been a part of Hollywood for over three decades now. He began his career by starring in the horror film A Nightmare on Elm Street. However, his role as Tom Hanson in the TV series 21 Jump Street made him a household name. He has starred in several hits since then, especially the Pirates of the Caribbean series.
Achieving so much was not obviously easy for the actor. In fact, he had a troubled childhood that almost destroyed his career. This information about his childhood was revealed during his highly publicized defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard. The actor opened up about dealing with his mother, Betty Sue Palmer, who was apparently “cruel.” The actor initially wanted to become a musician but due to financial issues, he had to struggle a lot.

Not a lot of people know that actor Johnny Depp had to work really hard to get where he is today. Last year, he fought a long defamation trial against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, over an op-ed she wrote implying that she was abused by Johnny Depp. The actor managed to win the trial as it was concluded that he was defamed in the op-ed.
It was revealed during the trial that Johnny Depp had a troubled childhood. He talked about growing up with a mother who was “cruel” and how he thought that her treatment was normal.
The actor’s mother was cruel
During the trial, the Pirates of the Caribbean star took the stand and talked about his mother, Betty Sue Palmer’s treatment and how it affected his life,
“In our house, we were never exposed to any type of safety or security, the only thing to do was stay out of the line of fire. My mother was quite unpredictable. She had the ability to be as cruel as anyone can be with all of us. I had a very interesting childhood. One that I thought was normal until a certain age.”
The actor’s mother was quite unpredictable and they moved a lot. Her insults would affect the actor emotionally and psychologically. When Depp was 15, his father got sick of his mother’s behavior and left her.
Johnny Depp struggled financially
The actor decided to drop out of school when he was 16. Struggling with substance abuse, the actor initially wanted to become a musician and formed a band called The Kids. The band got quite famous, however, the setback was their financial condition. He had to sell pens for a telemarketing company and reportedly lived in a car for a very long time.
Very soon he moved to Los Angeles from Florida and as per Nicki Swift, actor Nicholas Cage motivated him to become an actor. He reportedly worked really and finally got the role of Glen Lantz in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).
