One Piece, the infamous Japanese manga series created by Eiichiro Oda and illustrated and written by him, is among the best-selling manga series in history. Its anime adaption significantly improved the series’ popularity. Netflix’s new series decided to have a fresh take on the story and stayed a little too far from the source. However, the live-action adaptation of One Piece has stayed faithful to Zoro’s backstory by explaining the tragic death of Kuina.

For the first time, Eiichiro Oda’s Pirating Odyssey has a full-fledged live-action TV adaptation after more than twenty years of capturing fans’ hearts with its adored anime and manga. One Piece on Netflix is performing brilliantly. The series has received glowing reviews since it honors the original content while still making wise improvements.

Despite making changes from the original story, the live-action series has stayed loyal to the backstory of Zoro and touched on the topic of Kuina’s death. It happens in Episode 4 of the series when the audience finds out the goal of Roronoa Zoro and how it is connected to a childhood friend named Kuina.

In the anime and manga, Kuina and Zoro trained to become the best swordsmen as they trained together with many other villagers. The two form a close bond as they train in secrecy every single day until one of them achieves the title of most skilled sword wielder to ever live. The terrible loss of Kuina then undermines this pact, explaining Zoro’s desire to one day become the greatest swordsman in the world in her memory.

In the past of Zoro, which is revealed through flashbacks in the live-action series, manga, and anime, Kuina repeatedly defeats the young warrior while he is in training, inspiring him to improve and reach his full potential.

The One Piece series on Netflix made a small change in the story. In the source material, Kuina is said to have fallen a set of stairs, suffering fatal injuries in the process. However, in the live adaptation, she dies of a mysterious accident. After Kuina’s terrible death, she leaves him her weapon, which provides Zoro with the motivation he needs to become a great swordsman. It gives rise to his unique Three-weapon Style.

After the success of the live-action series, the producers of the show revealed the scripts for a possible Season 2 are completed and that the next season could be ready to air in a year, once production can begin. Marty Adelstein, CEO of Tomorrow Studios, which produces the live-action One Piece in partnership with manga creator Eiichiro Oda and publisher Shueisha, said the scripts are ready.

Tomorrow Studios president Becky Clements told Variety,

“Realistically, hopefully, a year away, if we move very quickly, and that is a possibility. Somewhere between a year and 18 months, we could be ready for air.”

The production of a potential second season would not be able to begin until the SAG-AFTRA strike against the AMPTP has been resolved.
