Steven Spielberg who directed the 2018 film Ready Player One has finally shared an important yet a bit disheartening update on the sequel.
If you’ve been wondering if Spielberg will direct Ready Player Two as well, then let us tell you that the filmmaker has no plan for it. The acclaimed director seems to have no plans for this year as he confirmed his involvement in the film as a producer.
Ready Player One was released by Warner Bros. in 2018, based on Ernest Cline’s 2011 novel of the same name. The film featured actor Tye Sheridan in the titular role of Wade Watts, an Ohio native who submerges himself in a virtual reality realm OASIS. However, the sequel won’t be directed by the first film’s director.
Steven Spielberg Shares Latest Update on Ready Player Two
It’s been six years since Steven Spielberg‘s Ready Player One came out and generated positive reviews from fans and critics. Following the first film adapted from the novel of the same name, there have been speculations about the arrival of the sequel Ready Player Two. Thanks to Spielberg, who finally gave insights into the project, revealing he won’t helming the sequel but producing it.
While speaking to Showbiz 411 at the Universal Pictures gala at Soho House after the 2024 Oscars, the Empire of the Sun maker was asked about the sequel to the 2018 film, to which the filmmaker replied:
“We’re in the discovery phase, trying to figure out what’s next.”
His statement suggests that currently, the globally renowned director won’t be working on a new project this year. However, he will indeed serve as the producer for Ready Player Two, which might disappoint many fans who anticipated Steven Spielberg’s involvement as the director.
Ready Player One intrigued moviegoers for its realm-crafting and pop culture references, and not to forget the extended homage to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 classic The Shining. Apart from Tye Sheridan’s Parzival, the film also starred Mark Rylance, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, and other notable artists.
