Much has been talked about Brendan Fraser’s comeback performance in The Whale, as he lifted the Academy Award for Best Actor for playing the role of Charlie, an unhealthy English teacher, who’s out of the world’s sight and hoping for a chance at redemption.

More than Fraser’s performance, what made the movie so beautiful, and as a result the Oscar-winning portrayal, is how easy it was to draw parallels between his real and reel life.

The Whale proved to be an ultimate redemption arc for the 54-year-old, who made the most of his first lead role in over a decade following emotional and physical challenges he faced off the camera for a multitude of reasons, including purportedly being blacklisted by some Hollywood bosses for claiming he’d been s*xually abused.

Now That Brendan Fraser Isn’t Drowning Anymore, It’s Time for The Whale Star to Fly

The Whale movie did make a lot of noise, deservingly, but Brendan Fraser has been tipping his toes in Hollywood waters since 2019 with DC Universe’s Doom Patrol. He plays the role of Cliff Steel, who’s codenamed Robotman.

Riley Shanahan is the face of the angry but very likable member of the Doom Patrol, and Fraser gives his voice, occasionally also featuring in flashback sequences. The role allowed him to slowly return to the chaos of Hollywood, but now doomed superheroes are set to say goodbye after season 4’s part two.

However, Fraser is now ready to tread waters with much higher stakes and should look for a spell in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

At the moment, Fraser’s popularity is as high, if not higher, than it was during the time of The Mummy in the 90s, providing studios perfect time to tap into this potential, and among them, Marvel Studios can certainly do with a new face, as they prepare to release three big movies (Thunderbolts, Captain America: Brave New World, and Deadpool 3) in 2024.

As mentioned above, The Whale, in some ways allowed Fraser to relive his life experiences on the big screen. Similarly, there’s a character in MCU that mimics the trials and tribulations of his life.

Brendan Fraser Might Just Be the Best Fit as MCU’s Most Psychotic Superhero

Robert Reynolds (Sentry) is a troubled Marvel comic book character that roughly carries both sides – an unfathomable superhero and a suppressed supervillain known as the void.

This layered character, who’s also a drug addict, would be the ultimate test for Frasers as well as a potential jackpot for Marvel Studios if he manages to realize its full potential.

Considering his real-life issues and his recent conflicting portrayals (lazy-but-yearning-for-a-redemption Charlie and angry-but-kind-hearted Cliff), the School Ties star would be perfect to play another bi-polar – for the lack of a better word – role that despite all his issues and complicated psyche is still perceived as a good apple.

And Fraser’s next role might just be a great audition for Marvel to see the potential of what he could do on the big screen in a rogue role, as he’s set to appear in Martin Scorsese‘s Killers of the Flower Moon as ruthless lawyer W.S Hamilton.
