The Marvels created history by terribly making the biggest second-weekend drop in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe earning it immense backlash. However, the director of Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse has openly shared his opinion and claimed to have loved it. Soon after the director posted it on his social media, fans started to consider it a sleeper hit.

Marvel fans eagerly anticipated The Marvels starring Brie LarsonIman Vellani, and Teyonah Parris in their iconic roles, and when finally the movie hit theatres it led the Marvel Cinematic Universe toward the worst by failing to perform well in the second weekend and facing audience fatigue over its backstory and villain being underdeveloped.

However, director Phil Lord‘s bold stand on The Marvels has gradually excited fans to watch the movie and consider it a sleeper hit. The Spider-Verse director posted on his X (earlier Twitter) “I loved the Marvels” to which fans responded:

Another notable reason why fans have enjoyed The Marvels is Iman Vellani’s role as Ms. Marvel aka Kamala Khan, an extremely intelligent and rising teenage Marvel in the superhero world who’s even ready to build her team.

Nia DaCosta‘s The Marvels has received immense backlash over numerous issues like the prominence of female characters in the movie which was brought up in its previous Captain Marvel too. The other complaints include the “emasculation” of its male characters and being the worst MCU movie for Larson so far requires homework for a basic understanding of its plot. While speaking to Variety for an interview, the director of The Marvels Nia DaCosta has come up to respond to the criticism:

“There are pockets where you go because you’re like, ’I’m a super fan. I want to exist in the space of just adoration — which includes civilized critique. Then there are pockets that are really virulent and violent and racist — and sexist and homophobic and all those awful things. And I choose the side of the light. That’s the part of fandom I’m most attracted to.”

The director refuses to focus on the dark side of a movie’s reception and even revealed that she wanted to make this a fun movie revolving around three superheroes who team up to fight against the formidable foe. She also expressed her passion for comic books especially, for Kamala Khan’s story.
