The firing of former Fox News mainstay, Tucker Carlson caused a major upheaval in cable news this week. The long-time Fox News fixture was fired from the network on April 24, just a few days after the network and Dominion Voting Systems paid a pricey settlement in their legal dispute.

The former host of Tucker Carlson Tonight has finally broken his silence with a video that took some unexpected turns. The short video was posted to Twitter two days after his departure.

The right-wing television personality shared a video statement via Twitter on Wednesday without specifically mentioning his departure from Fox.

His departure occurred a few days after Fox reached a defamation settlement regarding its coverage of the 2020 presidential election.

Tucker Carlson’s First Public Statement After Fox News Firing

Following his departure from Fox News, Tucker Carlson posted a video to Twitter on April 26. The video is just over two minutes long, doesn’t specifically address his departure, and instead talks about ‘true things’ and ‘unbelievably stupid’ debates.

“Good evening. It’s Tucker Carlson,” he said at the beginning of his video before going on to say:

“One of the first things you realize when you step outside the noise for a few days is how many genuinely nice people there are in this country. Kind and decent people. People who really care about what’s true, and a bunch of hilarious people also. A lot of those. It’s got to be the majority of the population, even now, so that’s heartening. The other thing you notice when you take a little time off is how unbelievably stupid most of the debates you see on television are. They’re completely irrelevant. They mean nothing. In five years, we won’t even remember that we had them. Trust me, as someone who’s participated.”

For years, Fox News has been well-liked by its target audience, and Carlson doesn’t want be leave his former network out of his criticisms of “American media“. Moreover, he claimed that his career has been completely pointless after being fired from Fox despite amassing a $370M fortune.

It’s interesting that his departure, which was almost certainly inevitable, is already hurting Fox News’ ratings. Even former co-workers like Sean Hannity and Megyn Kelly don’t appear to be aware of the details of what really transpired.

Finally, He Said, ‘See you soon’

Tucker Carlson ended his speech by saying, “See you soon,” demonstrating that he has a plan in place to re-engage with his audience sooner or later. It’s difficult to avoid drawing comparisons between his predicament and that of former Fox News host, Bill O’Reilly, who was fired in 2017 (along with a sizable severance package). O’Reilly also planned a comeback on television later that year.

After O’Reilly was fired as host of The O’Reilly Factor, Carlson actually took over his old 8 p.m. ET time slot. Here is Carlson’s complete statement:

More than 85,000 people have retweeted and liked the video, just two hours after Tucker Carlson first tweeted it. Shortly after Fox News settled a defamation lawsuit brought by voting machine company, Dominion for $787 million, Carlson’s abrupt departure was announced.

According to unnamed sources cited by The Wall Street Journal, which also owns Fox News, Carlson’s dismissal was made because of messages in which he used derogatory language about Fox management and fellow employees.

Well, it is unclear if he has any plans to return to television. Also, it will be interesting to see if he speaks more openly about being fired in the days to come.
