Demon Slayer: Every Hashira Power Explained and Ranked

Demon Slayer: Every Hashira Power Explained and Ranked

The power system in the Demon Slayer anime is one of the simplest in the shonen genre, and that’s exactly why it works. There is no confusing power scaling, no random new forms that pop out of nowhere, and there is no overpowered protagonist either. This simplicity is what makes the entire system feel grounded.

Simply speaking, the characters breathe in different ways to make changes to their bodies for offensive and defensive purposes. Other than that, it’s simply amazing sword work. So, in this simple yet amazing system, let’s rank the best Hashira abilities that we’ve seen in the anime and manga.

10. Insect Breathing’s Poison-Based Combat

Starting with the number 10, we have Shinobu’s Insect Breathing technique. Among all the abilities, this one is unique because it doesn’t give raw strength at all. In Shinobu’s case, her blade is thin and only has a sharp edge near the very end of the blade, like an insect’s stinger. Since this doesn’t allow her to kill demons by beheading them, Shinobu relies on poisons that she injects into the demons using her blade.

While this technique has killed many demons without much effort (at least during combat), it ranks at the lowest position because it’s the most situational. Meaning, her poison takes time to work, and against demons who are fast enough, she won’t be able to use her poison either. The strongest foe Shinobu killed was by sacrificing her own body, which was full of poison.

9. Love Breathing’s Speed Through Flexibility

Mitsuri Kanroji’s Love Breathing comes from her insanely flexible and unique body, which lets her swing her whip-like sword with amazing speed and long reach. With this technique, it’s less about whether you can kill the demon in one strike. It’s more about how much control you have over the situation in creative ways.

However, this technique ranks low because it’s built entirely around a single person’s traits rather than around a technique that can be mastered. It’s flashy, for sure, and it’s also effective when the whip-like sword is in the hands of Mitsuri. But it doesn’t offer the raw power that is required to kill a major demon from the story.

8. Serpent Breathing’s Precision Strikes

Obanai Iguro’s Serpent Breathing focuses on unpredictable, winding movements that mimic a snake, making his attacks hard to read and dodge. He also fights alongside his snake companion Kaburamaru, which adds a sneaky tactical edge to his combat style.

It lands at 8 because while the unpredictability is genuinely strong, the style itself doesn’t hit as hard or scale as well in high-level fights compared to styles built for raw damage or field control. It’s a smart, technical style, but not a dominant one.

7. Sound Breathing’s Explosiveness

Flashiness is where Tengen Uzui shines, even if he is a ninja by blood. This breathing technique turns sounds or any kind of vibrations in the environment into information that Tengen can use. He is able to predict enemy attacks because of this, see into the places where his eyes cannot reach, and is able to judge the situation better than most.

Tengen’s strikes are explosive, loud, and honestly nothing like a ninja’s fighting style. He also uses actual explosives that go well with his flashiness. Sound Breathing ranks at number seven because it’s more about the advantage of “knowing” by taking in more information and less about the destructive ability that other techniques in this ranking provide.

6. Flame Breathing’s Raw Heat and Power

Now we are getting into the territory where demons should start getting afraid. Kyojuro Rengoku’s Flame Breathing is the closest to the original first breathing technique (more on that in a minute), and it is built around powerful, heavy strikes that hit like a bullet. Each form in this breathing represents a different stage of fire, and the style is meant to overwhelm enemies through sheer passion. And that passion is something Rengoku has.

The reason this technique ranks in sixth position is that it is more about strength and less about versatility. Meaning, it doesn’t focus on adapting as much as it focuses on ending the demon in as few strikes as possible. That’s still incredibly effective, but the top five styles all bring more flexibility or scaling.

5. Water Breathing’s Versatility and Adaptability

Speaking of adaptability, Water Breathing is the one that is the best in that sense. Giyu Tomioka and countless demon slayers before him used this breathing technique because it’s the most balanced style in the universe. It changes forms as the situation demands. It can be calm if that’s what is needed, sharp and precise if the demon needs to be killed in a single strike, and can also work in defense if we include Giyu’s eleventh form that he invented.

This technique ranked 5th and is perfect because it perfectly balances out everything from every technique. It can be like Fire Breathing with its 10th form, and it can also be like Wind Breathing with it’s aggressionf, landing perfectly in between.

4. Wind Breathing’s Overwhelming Aggression

Sanemi Shinazugawa’s Wind Breathing is chaotic, relentless, and built to overwhelm enemies with nonstop aggressive strikes. With this technique, defense is never an option as it is literally never needed. There’s barely any pause between attacks, and the pressure alone forces opponents into constant defense instead of letting them plan a counterstrike.

It ranks in the fourth position because that aggression turns into serious damage output against even strong Upper Moons. The downside is that it can be reckless, but Sanemi’s raw willpower and physical toughness make up for it, pushing this style into the top four.

3. Mist Breathing’s Deception and Field Control

While Wind Breathing was focused on aggression, Mist Breathing goes in the totally opposite direction. This breathing technique is more focused on confusing the enemies and taking control of the entire battlefield. Muichiro Tokito, the Hashira with this technique, strikes in a way that seems to appear out of nowhere. In fact, his style feels more like a ninja’s than Tengen’s.

For the general demons, it is nearly impossible to predict what Tokito is going to do. The reason this technique ranks this high is that deception, combined with technical mastery, puts it ahead of basic techniques that only focus on raw power.

2. Stone Breathing’s Unmatched Force

That said, there is literally no need to fool your enemies or even precisely behead them if you can simply crush them entirely in a single strike. That is where Gyomei Himejima’s Stone Breathing comes in. It is all about pure physical strikes. Gyomei’s strikes are also grounded and devastating, matching his massive strength and durability. It would’ve been really problematic if Gyomei Himejima’s tragic background had turned him evil.

It ranks 2 because Gyomei is widely considered the strongest Hashira in raw combat ability, and his performance against Kokushibo backs that up completely. The only reason that this technique is not ranked at the top is that no one can surpass the original, after all.

1. Sun Breathing’s Original Dance

Sun Breathing is the original breathing style that every other technique branches from, making it the most complete and versatile style in the entire franchise. It includes wide-ranging forms covering speed, precision, and overwhelming offense, and demons genuinely fear it more than any other style. With this technique, Yoriichi Tsugikuni was able to cut Muzan, a being with overwhelming speed, into small cubes without Muzan even realizing what had happened.

It takes the top spot because it is everything that other techniques are, and then it is also more. In fact, even Tanjiro, who had learned Water Breathing when he became a demon slayer, turned into the strongest character in the franchise after he started using Sun Breathing properly. You may be wondering why Flame Breathing ranks so low if it’s so close to this. The reason for that is that Flame took all the offensive parts from Sun, making it really strong, but not useful in all situations.
